Examining First Nations Dementia Perspectives and Wholistic Relational Supports for Culturally Safe Risk Reduction, Assessment, and Post-Diagnosis Care in Northwestern Ontario - Brittany Skov (2023)
The research highlights a stark disparity: dementia rates among First Nations, Métis, and Inuit (FNMI) populations in Canada are projected to rise by 273% by 2050, significantly outpacing the 187% increase expected in non-Indigenous populations.
This study sought to move beyond Western medical models to understand how dementia is perceived through Nishnaabe research paradigms. It focuses on identifying existing community strengths ("assets") that can lead to more culturally safe care across the entire journey of the disease—from prevention to post-diagnosis support.
